A year’s worth of bulbs

Hyacinths are amongst my favourite ways to kick-start spring since their immaculate blooms bring with them the heady fragrance as well as pastel colours of pink, blue, white and lilac. The first blooms can emerge as early as February. Some early Anemones start popping up in late winter and they are especially welcome because they have such wonderful hues in every range of red, blue, crisp white and hot pink

Spring bulbs include Tulips, Daffodil bulbs, Crocuses, and Alliums. Spring flowering bulbs have in common that they need to be planted some 3–4 weeks before the frost hits the ground, because they need the cold season to start their biological clock ticking for their emergence the following year.

Summer is not a period where we particularly focus on bulbs, but this can be a real mistake as summer’s glories include Dahlias, Begonias, Lilies, Gladiolus and Callas. Summer flowering bulbs are planted in the late spring and only a couple of months later they will bloom. Because most of them are not winter hardy in cold climates, most summer flowering bulbs should be lifted and stored in a cool dry place to be used again the following year.

Well-known autumn flowering bulbs are Autumn Crocuses and Colchicums. Autumn flowering bulbs are planted in full summer. They will add some colour to your garden when it is most needed and have the added advantage of being bulbs you can leave in the ground over-winter without trouble.
