A new garden – clearing the site
You’ve just moved into a new home and all you can see is builder’s rubble. It can be almost impossible to imagine that one day that rubbish-strewn waste tip will be your beautiful garden, but by taking things slowly and sensibly you can achieve a great deal.
Begin by thinking about time. Seriously. How long will it take you to clear that ground? And how many hours would you prefer to put into growing and caring for plants, rather than picking up concrete and half-bricks? Exactly. And what’s the risk of you putting your back out as you fill your wheelbarrow with all that stuff? It’s often best to pay a professional to come and collect all the debris and rubbish and cart it away, even if you have to economise by buying seeds rather than plants for a couple of years. To this end, don’t have any fencing put up until the ground has been cleared, because it’s much easier to get all the rubbish out if you don’t have to lift it over fences or carry or push it through gates.
Your builder may have laid turf for you. Don’t be fooled! Lift several turves and look at what’s underneath. Often they’ve just dozered the site flat and left all the rubbish to come up through your lawn and flower beds in the next few years!
This is also the time to look at the levelness of your garden and to decide if you’re happy with any slopes, as this is your one and only chance to level them off, or terrace them.
