Christmas decorations - evergreen light display
This is the nil plus ultra of Christmas décor. Trust me, if you make this, your family and friends will be as green with envy as your display is green with pine. You may have to even throw a party just to show it off! If you have a conifer tree or shrub in your garden, this also costs just about nothing.
You need
- Chicken wire
- Lots of florist's wire
- Oasis and/or damp moss
- At least 60 sprigs of conifer
- About 4 metres of metallic ribbon
- A strong wire or chain from which to hang it
- 4 tall candles or a string of white Christmas lights
- 36 small decorations eg gilded pine cones from the garden, small boxes wrapped in Christmas paper, tiny crackers, ribbon bows etc.
This does take a bit of preparation, because you need to make two chicken wire tubes that are around the same size, and one larger one. Ideally you want to fill these with dampened moss (from florists) but if you're really dedicated you can cut up oasis and use that, or finally you can use dampened cotton wool to line the tubes. Wrap each tube into a circle and fasten strongly with wire. Now you attach the conifer sprigs to the rings.
Here comes the complicated bit - you have to get one small ring inside the other, at right angles and then both of them inside the larger ring, which has to be the horizontal one of the three. Now wrap the ribbon around all three rings, wire in the decorations and space the candles equally around the horizontal ring, wiring them securely into place (a tip, heat a twist of wire, push it into the base of the candle and leave to cool, now you candle is secure) and remember never to leave this unattended while candles are burning.
