Garden Design - A Garden like Monets

Monet’s failing eyesight may have contributed to the splashy colours and indistinct shapes we all take for granted as part of the late Impressionist period, and indeed that are the hallmark of his paintings of water lilies.  However there is no doubt that this avid plant collector, who swapped rare species with his friends and said ‘all my money goes on the garden’, knew exactly what he was trying to achieve with his plantings.

To get the Monet effect you need to marry bright colours with large shapes – water lilies against the Japanese bridge, roses against the metal arches, Iris seen against the stark white of the house wall.  Monet also used plants with ‘frothy’ outlines to create a fuzzy almost dreamlike atmosphere, gypsophila is a perfect example – its haze of white or pink flower heads acts as a confetti like background to bright flowers such as nasturtium and poppies and the rounded softer edged shapes of azaleas and peonies are used to offset tall stately plants like lupin and iris.

The list of flowering plants he grew every year is astonishing, apart from the trees, water lilies, shrubs and roses he had: nasturtiums, ageratums, zinnias, nicotianas, busy lizzies, verbenas, dahlias, rudbeckias, salvias, primulinus gladiolus, cleomes, cosmos, sunflowers, helianthus, hollyhocks, dahlias, cosmos, hibiscus, irises, peonies, rhododendrons, geraniums, wisterias, azaleas, wallflowers, daisies, delphiniums – in fact the whole point of the garden, for Monet, was to create a riot of colour and form from which he could paint, not with detailed botanical accuracy but with the exuberance that his flowers brought to him.
