Garden Design - Powis Castle

This twelfth century castle on a rock is graced with a seventeenth century garden.

Powis, one of the most fought over and fortified castles in Wales, became in the 17th century, a pleasure garden in the Renaissance style and the wonderful fusion of castle and planting creates a wonderland for the visitor.  Powis is a huge imposing building, of pink granite and faced with pink mortar, a far cry from its history as a bloody home for centuries of cross border feuding.  What was once a series of steep palisades dropping down sharply to prevent invaders from reaching the castle, became four limestone terraces which led to what was first a water garden on the valley floor, then a landscape park by William Emes, then a kitchen garden and, now, a sumptuous flower garden. The four terraces are noted for their sculpture, some fantastically mounded and shaped yew trees – which a team of gardeners spends six weeks of every year pruning - and National Trust plantings that are rebuilding the original 17th century terrace gardens.

In addition to many unusual plants (and Powis Castle is the name of a very lovely Artemisia) you can find original lead statues, a superb Victorian wrought iron orangery and an aviary on the terraces which once held flamingos, apparently!

Later, around the middle of the 18th century the then owners planned a wilderness garden, influenced by the work of Capability Brown and other gardeners who built ‘natural’ perspectives.  This part of the grounds is now superb display of rhododendrons and particularly notable in autumn.  Worth noting on the approach to the Castle are the superbly mixed and well maintained traditional hedges that line the road up to the Castle proper.
