Ornamental grasses and ferns

Grasses and ferns are becoming more common in our gardens, the former for dry poor soil and the latter for damp, shady places. Here are some of the best to consider:

  1. Carex Buchannanii - This grass gives wonderful height and is a wonderful coppery brown colour – it is evergreen so will give all year effect.
  2. Festuca Sea Urchin - This is a graceful blue coloured grass, with a nice compact form
  3. Festuca Glauca/ Glauca Elijah Blue - Two wonderful blue grasses that look good all year round. The blue of this grass intensifies in the heat of the summer to a gorgeous blue/silver shimmer
  4. Ophiopogan Nigrescens - A black grass which is very striking, great for contrast – it spreads easily too and has little pink flowers
  5. Carex Evergold - a striking green and yellow striped sedge which is an excellent choice for ground cover
  6. Carex Testacea - an unusual grass with olive leaves which turn orange in the summer sun and green in the shade. This is an evergreen grass which will tolerate either sun or shade.

Ferns

  1. Cyrtomium fortunei is one of those rare plants that has a longer common name - Fortune’s Cold Hardy Holly Fern! Anyway it’s an excellent hardy fern that will tolerate colder drier conditions. The dull grey-green colour will add a soft look to a shady corner and it’s an easy fast grower with a tall, erect habit. Depending on your location it’s Evergreen to semi-evergreen.
  2. Athyrium – the gorgeous Japanese Painted Fern which has ribs of purple and pink and grows in wet conditions.
  3. Blechnum Spicant – a pretty, bright green, evergreen fern that likes moderately wet conditions and grows to about two feet across. It’s called Deer Fern in the USA, not because deer like it, but because they don’t!
