If you’re planning a new garden you have a fantastic opportunity to invest in a major fertilisation system. Mineral fertilisers, like the rocks they come from decompose slowly into soil, releasing their key minerals gradually over a period of years. Because you can fork them in before planting, you’ll be making a long term investment in your garden health. Here are a few to consider.

Epsom salts not only help tired feet; they are a fertiliser too! Containing 10 % magnesium and 13% sulphur, Epsom salts are a fast-acting fertiliser anybody can apply in a granular form.

Gypsum, when powdered, is a mineral that contains 20% calcium and 15% sulphur. It can be used to add calcium to your garden without raising the soil pH.

Soft-rock phosphate is sometimes also called colloidal phosphate and it contains 16% phosphorus and 19% calcium and these nutrients are in chemical forms that plants can use relatively easily. This powder is easily forked into the topsoil where breaks down slowly, so one application may last for years in the soil. It also contains many micronutrients and is often used when municipal authorities plan new gardens as it releases its goodness for decades.

Limestone is a product that has to be mined - and is a by product of the limestone used for housing. Different kinds of limestone have varying nutrient levels, depending on their source. It is mainly used to raise pH for those who desire to grow lime loving plants like camellias and azaleas, but Dolomitic limestone, which has 46% calcium and 38% magnesium, quite clearly also adds magnesium to the soil. This powder also comes in an easy to spread granular form.
