A year’s supply of perennials

The great thing about perennials is that they come up year after year and so the investment you make in them repays itself over the period. It’s easy to have perennials in the garden all year round, but getting ones that have real interest is a bit more of a challenge. Here are a few ideas:

Helleborus niger – Christmas Rose, which has learthery dark green leaves that last all year and flowers that appear white and then turn purplish. In flower between December and April.

Mahonia repens - the Oregon Grape, you want the creeping version which will grow from sun to low shade, it’s evergreen and has bright yellow flowers and black grape-style flowers in autumn.

Armeria - Sea Thrift, which flowers in spring to early summer with bright pink or lilac coloured flowers and fine spiky foliage that resembles a tuft of grass. Deadheading causes repeat flowering and although they look dainty they are actually tough customers, able to grow in rocky soil and even in high winds and sea spray.

Echinops ritro – the Globe Thistle, which flowers from early summer to autumn in shades of blue or white. It appears to bloom forever, because the seed head is as attractive as the flower, meaning there is no need to deadhead. Echinops even does well in poor, dry soil.

Hosta – a midsummer flowerer in shades of purple and white. Most do best in partial shade, but the golden leaf varieties can handle a good deal of sun.

Iris siberica – otherwise known as Siberian Iris, it flowers in early spring and has blue purple and white flowers. They can spread quickly in moist conditions and require division when they get crowded. In warmer counties they may flower again in autumn.
