Christmas decorations - place garlands
For a really special meal, or perhaps just for a very special guest, you can make a gorgeous place garland. Evergreens and berries encircling each place setting look entrancing and you can match them with a posy of the same material tied to the chair back, which makes a lovely gift for your guests to take home at the end of the celebration.
The simplest way to do it, if you are preparing the meal as well, is to make the posies the day before and store them somewhere cool - you need to allow yourself time to make the garlands, so start them in the morning, and don't put them on the table until an hour or so before you eat.
You need
- Wire to shape the garland crescents
- Florist's wire
- Tape to wrap them; either florist's tape or masking tape
- 20 or so sprigs of conifer per garland
- 15 or so sprigs of ivy or other variegated plant
- 10 sprigs of holly or cotoneaster or anything with berries
- Ribbon for bows
Shape the wire into a 16 - 24 inch crescent, and wrap with tape. Attack the plant material to this shape, using thinner pieces on the left and thicker on the right so that the garland becomes naturally fatter at the right hand end. Finish by wiring a bold ribbon bow to the right hand end of the garland. Now wrap it around the plate so that the bow is on the knife side of the plate and the narrower end on the fork side. If it is too close to the plate your guests will find it hard to eat, so move the garland back and forth until you get the optimum distance.
