Growing strawberries

Strawberries will have more flavour when grown in areas where days are sunny and nights are cool – this means it’s not a good idea to cover your strawberry plants unless there is a really strong risk of ground frost.

Ideally you should plant strawberries in raised beds that have not had members of the Solanaceae family (tomatoes, pepper, aubergine) grown there for at least three years, as many pests and diseases transfer to them.

Improve the soil before planting with compost, or well aged manure. For really serious growers, now is the time to put down a weed block and cut 'x's into it to plant through. This will protect berries from most of the snails, slugs, earwigs and wasps that like to munch on the berries when they are in contact with the soil, as well as reducing berry rot. Strawberry plants have shallow roots so they need moisture throughout the growing season which means you need to keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Container gardening

Terracotta strawberry pots are very pretty but if they are not glazed, they can be extremely difficult to keep moist enough. Their advantages are that they keep the plants nicely separated and their distinctive shape means the berries ‘pendulate’ or hang down so they are easy to find.

Another great way to grow strawberries is to plant in narrow planter boxes that are approximately six inches deep by seven inches wide and anything from eighteen inches to four feet long! Use fresh, not recycled potting mix, adding additional made for strawberries and other fruits which you need to incorporate completely into potting mix. Plant so the crowns are not buried by time you water in. Keep moist but not soggy. Grow in full sun all day and expect luscious berries in 3 months.
