Christmas gardens - an outdoor party
It sounds insane, doesn't it? But you'd be surprised just how popular a winter garden party can be. We tend to spend so much time indoors, getting hot and grumpy and not using up the energy we gain from eating so much rich food, that the chance to get outside and have a change of air and location, can remove a lot of the bad temper that accrues over the 'season of goodwill'!
Plan ahead, and buy some of the charcoal or gel hand warmers that people can carry in their pockets. Put on your garden heater, light your chiminea or even fire up the barbecue, now fill that space with little red candles or white candles in red candle holders, scented candles that smell spicy, such at cinnamon, vanilla or pine are good too - it all helps give one corner of the garden a warm and cosy air.
Make sure you have some warming food - thick soup in polystyrene cups served with oven hot bread, coffee spiced with cinnamon, mulled wine, and hot apple juice spiced with nutmeg and cloves for the kiddies. Hot brownies and warming gingerbread are wonderful too, but don't have anything that drips or is runny, as people hate making spills and messes, even in the garden.
Garden games are possible too. Pass the parcel can be played outdoors, and treasure hunts are fun if you hide tiny parcels under plants and give out clues that lead people to them. It's all part of getting people to move around, stay warm and appreciate the beauty of your winter garden.
