Scuba Diving - first steps

While we all think of divers as super fit, you certainly don't have to be so to start diving. You only have to be able to swim a few lengths, duck-dive and tread water. This is because dive training is divided into three sections: theory, pool work and open water diving.

First is the classroom tuition where you learn about the things like water pressure and the basics of diving medicine.

Second - in the pool, or in sheltered shallow water - you will be taught basic diving skills; how to use the equipment and clear your mask, how to work a little with flippers and how to manoeuvre when you are weightless underwater. This is where you learn how to adjust buoyancy using the buttons on your diving jacket - on your first lesson you can expect to shoot up and down like a lift, it's a skill that takes a while to develop and you'll find that even as you try to regularise your depth, you're also having to concentrate on your ears. Even in two metres of water the pressure on your ears is enough to mean you have to clear them regularly as you bob up and down, and learning this technique in a pool means you can easily cope with an open water dive.

Turning and twisting underwater are different in a dive suit and getting the hang of them is best done in the pool. Often people forget the length of flippers or the extra volume of tanks on their backs, and learning how to move with these new 'body parts' is quite a skill.

Once you have mastered these basic skills you will be taken on a supervised 'real' dive in a lake or at sea.
