Five Top Dives - Worldwide

Fiji1. Fiji has been called the soft coral capital of the world. The island has a huge range of quality dive sites displaying around a thousand species of fish, and several hundred types of corals and sponges. The diverse marine life includes large pelagic species such as sharks, tuna, turtles, as well as fish of all hues and sizes. Fiji is also home to the Pilot Whale and other whale species, including the Humpback and Sperm Whales, pass through Fijian waters. Dive sites include caves and grottoes, sharks, sunken ships, and even a World War II aircraft.

Tobago2. Tobago is an ecological haven, with over two hundred species of birds, ancient tropical rainforests, protected Leatherback and Green Turtles and migrating Whale Sharks. However it is only suitable for experienced divers; there are many sites that offer gentle dives for beginners. Species you can expect to see include Manta Rays, Great Hammerheads, schooling jacks and a myriad of reef fish including Barracudas, Snapper, turtles, Sting Rays and what is arguably the Caribbean's most prolific and healthy coral. For non-dive days Little Tobago and St. Giles islands both have bird sanctuaries with large populations.

Russia3. The North Russian inland White Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean basin, is rich in marine and bird life. Every winter, Greenland seals make their rookeries here, the uninhabited islands teem with bird colonies and the sea is home to whales. Throughout the winter, the sky lights up with the colours of the Aurora Borealis. Diving reveals a mixture of temperate and arctic species, swaying kelp and ice masses towering on the surface. Cod, wolf-fish, sea perch and butter fish may be encountered along with soft corals, sponges, sea stars and huge basket stars, crabs, urchins, and shrimps.

The Philippines4. The Philippines is a diver's paradise - 7,107 beautiful islands, many with stunning beaches, untouched reefs and a diverse marine eco system. As an example you can dive with the Dugongs at Dimakya Island, or Thresher Sharks at Malapascua or snorkel with Whale Sharks at Sorsogon. For wreck enthusiasts there are the many Japanese wrecks at Sangat. If you really want to get away from it all try the tiny island of Cabilao where the reefs are home to barracuda, sharks and large rays.

The Sea of Cortez in Mexico5. The Sea of Cortez in Mexico, once called the "World's Aquarium" by Jacques Cousteau, is a stunning experience. Diver's can expect to see some of the most impressive marine animals in the world; Hammerhead Sharks, Whale Sharks, Blue, Grey and Orca Whales, Dolphins and Giant Pacific Manta Rays, etc. Dotted with underwater mountains and canyons, the Sea of Cortez circulates huge amounts of nutrient-enriched water, producing seasonally heavy plankton blooms that in turn contribute to the massive diversity of tropical and pelagic fish found throughout its waters.
