5 Top European Dives
Porvoo
In southern Finland this town has two diving clubs, not surprising when you think this harbour was established 650 years ago. Such a long history means there are many wrecks making for interesting dives. Also, the lack of shipworms in these cold waters preserves the wrecks well. In wintertime ice-diving is possible, but it is important to be sure your suit is fit for such frigid diving conditions.
Geneva
While Geneva is not the cheapest place to visit, there is such a range of diving experience in the area that it's like taking three holidays in one. Local clubs organise diving expeditions to dive on wrecks in the Geneva lake - which is full of fishing and merchant wrecks, and in mountain lakes which are often deep and clear, and ice diving.
Iceland
In Iceland's national parks you can dive in inland freshwater canyons, in ice water, or in sulphurous water heated by volcanoes or you can dive off the coast in clear water with a huge range of marine life, or - if you have the necessary kit - glacier dive in the coldest, clearest water in the world.
Sweden
Diving in Sweden can be divided in three main activities: west coast, east coast and lake diving. On the east coast, because of the low salinity of the Baltic Sea which is diluted with fresh water, ship worms and other organisms hardly exist, so wooden wrecks are almost perfectly preserved. The warship Vasa, for example, which sank in 1628 was salvaged, almost whole, in 1961. On the west coast water has more marine life, but the best part of Sweden is the lake diving - Sweden's lakes are as clear as gin!
Croatia
The Adriatic Sea is very rich in caves, crevices and canyons. And many of its ports have been disputed for many years, leading to wrecks from storms and naval wrecks as a result of battles, which means many port dives in bays will show you wrecks dating from the middle age till the present day.
